Mark 5:22-24, 35-43
22 ….Jairus is… “one of the rulers of the synagogue,… and when he sees Jesus,… he “falls at his feet,”
The magnitude of an action like this being taken by this man, of all people, is enormous, JAIRUS is a Levite, he is a preacher who comes from a long line of preachers. He has studied and prepared All his life, At his grandfathers feet and at his father’s, he would have attended the school of the prophets and because of his position as a “ruler of the synagogue” we can assume he was a good student. We can further assume that JAIRUS was politically savy in temple politics as well, remember, the text describes him as a ruler. Jairus has worked hard to achieve his position in life, he is known in the church and in the community at large. He knows the position his fellow Rabbis take as regards Jesus. And yet his circumstance has brought him to JESUS. And the opinions of others, power and position are all put at risk when he, in a public place, in front of a crowd of people, gets down on his knees and humbles himself before Jesus.
Brethren when your need is great enough you won’t let convention, position or other folks get in-between you and Jesus.
23 “And besought him” greatly,” saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: (AND) I pray thee, come and “lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live”.
“…besought Him, greatly…”, JAIRUS doesn’t come by night, he does not send a servant, what JAIRUS wants from JESUS requires that he go directly to the source and he doesn’t care who hears him, “my little girl is deathly ill AND I need “your” help.
Now if we look closely at what happens here we see JAIRUS’ professing his faith in Jesus, “loudly and publicly”. When he says to Jesus, “…I pray thee come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.
1) “I pray thee…” not a disciple or an apostle. There are times when nobody else will do.
I’d be willing to bet mouths dropped and a group gasp went through the crowd, this was a well known, well respected “ruler” of the synagogue, whose circumstance had brought him to JESUS for a solution. JESUS, I believe that if you’ll just come and put your hand on my child she’ll be healed, I believe that if you’ll put your hands on her, JESUS, my daughter will live. What a “public” confession of FAITH in JESUS.
